The Bramston Beach Progress Association has developed a service providing SMS flood warnings for residents and travellers using the Mirriwinni to Bramston Beach road.

We use a feed from a river gauge close to the Russell River bridge; we use this data for the warning system. The gauge is owned by the Qld Government. We do not use BOM data, which also has a feed from this gauge, due to its latency.

The river height data is shown hourly below; our warning system is fed data constantly to give us the most up-to-date river height information. 

A yearly subscription of $5.00 will provide SMS warnings at various stages of flooding. The first SMS warns when water is very close to the road; at about the 6.5 metre river height, subsequent warnings are sent at every 200-millimetre increment as the river rises. Once the flood begins to recede, SMSs are then sent at every 200 millimeters as the flood recedes until the water is off the road.

Images of flooding stages, similar to the image on the right, will be added over the current wet season; the SMS triggers will also be adjusted over the next few months through feedback from subscribers.

* In September 2025 we had a situation where heavy rainfall fell in the ranges behind Bramston Beach, causing the roads to flood at a very fast rate. Bramston had very little rain, and everyone was taken by surprise. The SMS system has now been modified to also send out warnings where it is probable that the road will flood by a specific time based on the rate of increase. This improvement will allow people to get past the flood section well before the road floods.
